The World Bank spokesman has announced that donors to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund have agreed to decide about transfer of funds to humanitarian aid agencies by December 10.
In the meantime, people in Afghanistan are deeply concerned about the unfolding humanitarian crisis in their country, urging the World Bank to allow the flow of aid and unfreeze the crisis-stricken country's blocked assets.
Economic experts say that while aid would be helpful, the international community in cooperation with the Taliban must seek other options to revive Afghanistan’s economy rather than merely banking on temporary donor programs.
This comes as the UN bodies and aid agencies have called for more urgent assistance amidst harsh winter.
The US has frozen nearly 10 billion in assets of Afghanistan as it tries to keep the Taliban from accessing the money.
The US sanctions on the Taliban have led to a wave of hunger and poverty in Afghanistan, pushing a large portion of people to the brink of catastrophe. Afghans now hope that donor countries agree to extend a helping hand to them.
