Humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan: Health clinics are closing

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society has warned that the health care system in Afghanistan is on the brink of collapse, threatening to deepen the country’s humanitarian crisis just as temperatures have begun to drop.

They are appealing for $38 million to continue funding health clinics, emergency relief, and other services in the country.

Thousands of health care facilities have run out of essential medicines. Afghan doctors have not been paid for two months, with no paychecks in sight. Medical associations protested in Kabul chanting and carrying placards saying: “Keep your politics out of my healthcare” and “Patients over politics”.

Medical care has always been critical in Afghanistan even in previous governments. Daesh and other terrorists and militant groups have bombed many health centers across the country.

Afghanistan, now, under the Taliban control is facing many challenges. Urgent international action is needed to support millions of people struggling with rising hunger and the collapse of services.
