President Joe Biden’s approval rating fell to 43 percent amid the chaos of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, showed an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll on Thursday.

That is down 6 points from a survey done in July, marking the lowest for the Democratic president in the poll since he took office.

According to the poll, 36 percent of independents approve of Biden’s job handling, while 55 percent disapprove.  Also, 85 percent of Democrats approve of the job Biden is doing, whereas 13 percent disapprove.

The United States invaded Afghanistan and toppled a Taliban-run government in 2001, alleging that the Taliban were harboring al-Qaeda. American forces occupied the country for about two decades on the pretext of fighting against the Taliban.

However, as the US forces left Afghanistan, the Taliban stormed into Kabul, weakened by continued foreign occupation. The group overthrew the Afghan government in mid-August.

Following the takeover, Biden’s approval rating dropped below 50 percent over multiple polls. A separate Morning Consult Poll released Monday showed the president’s approval rating fell to 48 percent.

His approval rating is largely driven by softening support among Democrats and independents.

Amid the withdrawal of US forces, Daesh struck the Kabul airport on August 26, killing at least 180 people, mostly Afghan civilians and about a dozen US troops. The terrorist group claimed the responsibility for the attack.

The US evacuated over 124,000 people from Afghanistan, including about 5,500 Americans.

In a fiery speech Tuesday, Biden described the chaotic evacuation effort as an “extraordinary success.”

“I was not going to extend this forever war, and I was not extending a forever exit,” Biden said.

Morning Consult found 61 percent of voters did not approve of how Biden handled the pullout. This includes 94 percent of Republicans, 71 percent of independents and 26 percent of Democrats.

Meanwhile, 71 percent of Americans say that the US’s role in Afghanistan was a “failure,” while 20 percent labeled it a success.

The poll, which surveyed 1,241 adults between Aug. 26-31, 2021, has a margin of sampling error of 3.8 percentage points.
