Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh

Dismissing Israeli claims

Iran has dismissed Israeli accusations that it was involved in an attack on an Israeli-owned oil tanker off the coast of Oman late on Thursday. Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh added that the Israeli accusations are completely baseless. He noted that the regime is the root cause of insecurity in the region and that regional players backing Israel are responsible for such insecurity. The US said on Friday that the attack on the Israeli-affiliated ship was carried out by a drone. Washington and Tel Aviv immediately blamed Iran for the incident without providing any evidence. But resistance sources told Iran’s al-Alam Arabic news network that the attack was in retaliation for a recent deadly Israeli air raid on an airport in Syria’s western Qusayr region.

Afghanistan fighting

Three rockets have struck the Kandahar airport in southern Afghanistan as the Taliban press ahead with their offensive across the country. The chief of Kandahar airport said the attack happened overnight with at least two rockets hitting the runway. The official said all flights were cancelled due to the assault. He said work is underway to repair the runway. The Taliban have claimed responsibility. The militants have recently launched sweeping attacks on the outskirts of Kandahar, raising fears they are on the verge of capturing the provincial capital. Fierce clashes are also underway in several cities and provinces as the group is inching closer to take provincial capitals including Herat in the west and Lashkar Gah in the south.

US eviction ban expired

Millions of Americans are at risk of eviction from their homes after a ban on booting out indebted renters expired Saturday night. The US Supreme Court allowed the 11-month-old moratorium to stay in place last month but ruled that any further extension would require congressional approval. The Republicans in the House of Representatives, however, blocked Democratic-led efforts to extend the eviction ban through mid-October. The legislation is now adjourned for a six-week summer recess of the house. The delay drew criticism from Democratic representatives. Elizabeth Warren said many families are facing a devastating, disruptive and unnecessary eviction. Missouri representative Cori Bush also spent Friday night outside the US Capitol in an act of protest.
