Nicaragua celebrates 42nd anniversary of Sandinista Revolution

As Washington looks set to unleash another wave of harsh sanctions on Nicaragua, tens of thousands gathered at Plaza of the Revolution to commemorate 42 years since the Sandinista Front for National Liberation freed the country from the grip of American-backed dictator Anastasio Somoza.

Foreign dignitaries and leaders of the country’s social movements took part in a ceremony led by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, who denounced ongoing US efforts to keep the country from developing on its own terms.

The leftist party has been back in power for the past 14 years, and despite a well-coordinated international media campaign aimed at undermining their government, it’s obvious that such social programs have earned the Sandinistas the support of a wide swath of Nicaraguan society.

In 2018, the US backed a failed coup here, which left hundreds of Nicaraguans dead, including dozens of police officers. Road blocks erected by anti-government demonstrators quickly morphed into hotbeds of rape, torture, and extortion.

Several figures alleged to have played a leading role in stoking the mayhem have been recently arrested.

Corporate media have labeled the detained ones as political prisoners, and the US has used their detentions to ramp up regime change efforts. But to honest observers, who see the huge crowds assembled across the country to support their government, it’s clear such forces are unlikely to succeed anytime soon.
