The leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky is standing trial for allegations of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace, among other charges which the Islamic cleric has denied.
Rounding up his address to the court, the leader of the defense team explained that the prosecution has not establish any case against Zakzaky.
He said none of the people accused of the crimes attributed it to his client and the court has released many of them.
The prosecution has presented a total of fifteen witnesses including Nigerian military officers. But Zakzaky’s defense team said all the witnesses that were brought before the court confirmed that they did not see Sheikh Zakzaky during the attack by the army.
The trial judge adjourned the case to July 28, when he is expected to deliver his ruling on the no case submission by Zakzaky’s defense team.
Sheikh Zakzaky has been in detention since December 2015 after soldiers of the Nigerian army attacked his home and worship center killing over 340 of his supporters.
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria have continued with protests demanding the release of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat. They have always insisted that the Islamic cleric is an innocent man who has suffered persecution by the Nigerian government.
