More police forces are reportedly being deployed to New York’s Times Square after a shooting during a street fight there on Sunday.

A small group of vendors got into an argument, which ended in the shooting of a 21-year-old marine near Broadway at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 46th Street.
Samuel Poulin was reportedly standing a few feet away and was struck by a bullet by one of the vendors.

He sustained minor injuries and survived but now the incident is triggering calls for a higher police presence in the area.

"It's important that we put a lot more of a police presence over there," NYPD Police Chief Rodney Harrison said at a press conference Monday.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also asserted that the police presence would be ramped up.

"We’re going to flood the zone… We're going to make sure Times Square is very well patrolled,” de Blasio said. "It is just an unacceptable state of affairs," he said. "This is a place that is precious and so important to New York City. It has to be safe, so we are adding additional officers."

The shooting caused panic among people in the area at the time, including tourists witnessing the shooting.

"It was a loud pop. At first we thought it was a fire cracker," eyewitness Sydney Santana told WABC. "We did see about 10 people running towards the hotel. [The victim] was moving. He was standing up, he was talking and then they put him on the stretcher."

A shooting in Times Square wounded two women and a 4-year-old girl in May.
