Former US president Donald Trump has lashed out at New York prosecutors over ‘making up lies’ in the search for a crime.
"After hundreds of subpoenas, over 3 million pages of documents, 4 years of searching, dozens and dozens of interviews, and millions of dollars of taxpayer funds wasted, they continue to be 'in search of a crime' and will do anything to frighten people into making up the stories or lies that they want, but have been totally unable to get," Trump said in a statement
The Republican leader asserted that New York City investigation into the Trump Organization is “a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt of all time."
"They will do anything to stop the MAGA movement (and me), even if it involves prosecutorial misconduct and harassment of a political opponent, which they are using at levels rarely seen before," he said. "They leak, they lie, and they campaign based on information that has already been gone through in other of the many investigations I have put up with."
Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. and New York Attorney General Letitia James, both Democrats, are the two main figures behind the latest charges.
The charges are related to the organization’s financial dealings as well as alleged attempts to inflate asset values in order to mislead investors.
The investigation started as a civil one in New York but later expanded to a criminal one.
The billionaire businessman has always suggested that investigations into his deeds are politically motivated but to this day no court or special counsel probe has managed to hold him accountable.
The former president also slammed Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell for urging former Attorney General Bill Barr to refuse to accept Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
The latest revelation is from a forthcoming book called “Betrayal” by ABC news correspondent Jonathan Karl.
"Had Mitch McConnell fought for the Presidency like he should have, there would right now be Presidential Vetoes on all of the phased Legislation that he has proven to be incapable of stopping," Trump said. "He never fought for the White House and blew it for the Country… Too bad I backed him in Kentucky, he would have been primaried and lost!"
