Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization’s chief financial officer, could face charges in a matter of days as a criminal tax probe against him is heading into the final stages, according to a US media report.
A grand jury has been hearing evidence about Weisselberg after obtaining his official tax returns, The New York Times reported.
The NYT report reiterated that the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance is apparently seeking to use the case against Weisselberg in a bid to push him towards cooperation with the office’s broader investigation into Trump Organization, an effort that has yielded no tangible result so far.
Weisselberg, a longtime friend of former US President Donald Trump, has served as the CFO of the Trump Organization for about 40 years and many believe that he could be a key source of information for investigators.
The investigation into the Trump Organization was launched after a congressional testimony by his former personal attorney Michael Cohen, who turned on his former boss since pleading guilty in 2018 to various fraud and campaign finance charges.
Meanwhile, Trump has slammed the state and local prosecutors in New York over their bid to launch a criminal probe into his company, describing it as a "continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History."
“This is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American history,” Trump said in a statement on May 26, 2021.
“No other President in history has had to put up with what I have had to, and on top of all that, I have done a great job for our Country, whether it’s taxes, regulations, our Military, Veterans, Space Force, our Borders, speedy creation of a great vaccine (said to be a miracle!), and protecting the Second Amendment,” he added. “This is purely political, and an affront to the almost 75 million voters who supported me in the Presidential Election, and it’s being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors.”
