Intro 6

So far in the campaigns, the seven candidates in Iran’s 2021 presidential election almost unanimously agree that the country’s most immediate concern is the economy. Ghazizadeh-Hashemi has promised to reduce inflation to below 5% by his fourth year in office if elected. Hemmati, who until days ago headed the Central Bank of Iran, has attempted to repel any blame for Iran’s current economic status. Jalili has drawn up a plan to render foreign sanctions ineffective. Mehr-Alizadeh has pledged to curb inflation “within three to four months.” Raesi has actively courted businessmen and merchants and declared a coalition with workers and entrepreneurs. Rezaei has promised to increase cash handouts to Iranian households by 10 times. And Zakani has clashed with Hemmati over who is responsible for the status quo.

But the hottest stage of the race, namely the presidential debates, and the most heated give-and-takes, more focused on politics, are yet to come. Follow the candidates on the campaign trail, including live on the presidential debates, at The Heat.

This is Iran’s 13th presidential election, and it will be covered here in full.
