In May 2017, Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, extended a warm welcome to Donald Trump. In early May, a Lebanese newspaper published top-secret documents about the failed Arab NATO project with the aim of forging a larger regional coalition against Iran.
According to Beirut-based al-Akhbar newspaper, the documents show that Trump began to lure its allies in West Asia into building an anti-Iran front after his first foreign trip to Riyadh as the president of the United States. Dubbed the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA) and the Arab NATO, Trumps plan was welcomed with great enthusiasm from the Saudis who tried to encourage other Arab leaders to join them. But the result was disastrous.
