South Korean president seeks US-North dialog

South Korean President Moon Jae-in entered his fifth and final year of his term and promised to make good on his pledge to generate peace on the Korean Peninsula.
President Moon had facilitated the summits between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2018. North Korea remains under US-led United Nations Security Council sanctions as Trump and Kim failed to reach a so-called grand bargain on denuclearization for sanctions relief.
At a press briefing of South Korean state security analysts for the foreign press, experts advocated a phased step by step approach. The Biden administration recently announced the completion a review of its North Korea policy, and while officials have suggested diplomacy would come first they have shared few details regarding the mix of incentives and deterrence they plan to employ.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in has just one year left in office. With that in mind his May 21st summit with US President Joe Biden may represent his last best chance to move Washington and Pyongyang toward dialog.
