Leader urges potential presidential candidates not to make unfeasible promises

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei addresses Iranians in a televised speech, April 5, 2021.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has called on potential candidates in Iran’s upcoming presidential election not to make pledges that may lure voters but are impractical.

In a televised address to the Iranian nation on Sunday, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the significance of the presidential vote slotted for June 18 and said those who would be running for the high office had to refrain from “spoiling the election with empty remarks, and [making] luring and unfeasible promises.”

“Those willing to take part in the race have to present people with a real action plan” while taking the country’s capacities into consideration, the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the elections as “a unique opportunity” for the country, which is “irreplaceable” when it comes to strengthening the foundations of Iran’s Islamic establishment.

“When people turn out [to vote], no power can shake the country,” said Ayatollah Khamenei, adding that anyone who participates in elections also contributes to the country’s power, security, and fate.

The Leader also warned against attempts to discourage people from turning up for the polls through questioning the work of the bodies in charge of holding the elections, such as the Constitutional Council.

All the elections held in the country over the past four decades have been healthy, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed, adding that although minor violations have been reported in the past, they had never been serious enough to affect the results in any way.

Iran is preparing to hold its 13th presidential election since the 1979 Islamic Revolution on June 18.

The election process will officially begin on May 11, when hopefuls register their names with the Election Office at the country’s Interior Ministry. The nominees must then have their qualifications approved by the Constitutional Council before they can run for president.
