Iran nuclear deal

Iran’s foreign minister has urged the European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal to play a constructive role in the upcoming meeting on the agreement. Mohammad Javad Zarif made the remark in a phone call with his British counterpart Dominic Raab. Zarif stressed the necessity of lifting all US sanctions against Iran and described them as illegal and unjust. He said Tehran will reverse its commitment cuts once it verifies the removal of the sanctions. The US reinstated the measures in May 2018 after it withdrew from the nuclear deal. A year later, Iran began rolling back its commitments, saying the remaining parties including Europeans have failed to compensate for the US pullout. Iran and those parties will meet in Vienna next Tuesday.

EU-Russian row

The European Union’s foreign policy chief has pledged the bloc’s unwavering support for Ukraine amid the recent escalation between Kiev and Moscow. Josep Borrell also expressed grave concern over Russian troop movement around Ukraine. He spoke after a phone call with the Ukrainian foreign minister. Tensions have recently risen between Russia and Ukraine. Kiev has accused the Kremlin of massing thousands of military personnel on its northern and eastern borders as well as on the Crimean Peninsula. Russia says the buildup is not threatening anyone. This follows a recent rise in armed clashes in eastern Ukraine between the country’s troops and pro-Russian forces.

Latin America coronavirus deaths

The coronavirus pandemic continues to take its toll on Latin America as the region is reeling from the deadly disease. Brazil registered some 1200 new deaths from the virus, bringing the total fatalities to more than 331,000. The country also reported over 31,000 new cases. The overall infections now hover around 13 million. Brazil is the second worst-hit country in the world after the United States. In Mexico, the Health Ministry announced over 1200 new confirmed cases taking the total infections to over 2,250,000. 136 new deaths were also reported. The overall fatalities have surpassed 204,000. This comes as separate data published recently by the Health Ministry suggested the actual death toll from the coronavirus may be at least 60% above the confirmed figure.
