Germany general elections
Germans are heading to the polls in regional elections which are seen as a litmus test for Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party. People are voting in the southwestern states of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Recent polls show that support for Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party Christian Social Union has fallen to around 30 percent. This is because voters are critical of the government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis, including a delayed start to free rapid testing. A face-mask corruption scandal also forced three lawmakers to resign. Leaders of the allied parties fear that a loss in regional elections could leave them in opposition at national levels
Dutch protest
Dutch riot police have used water cannon and batons to break up a protest in The Hague against the government’s coronavirus restrictions. Mounted police were also deployed to disperse protesters in the city. Several people were arrested as clashes broke out between the two sides. The protesters had violated social distancing rules and ignored police warnings to disperse. The protest was held a day before elections for the House of Representatives. The vote will be spread out over three days to avoid crowds at polling stations. On Saturday, the Netherlands reported nearly 6,400 new covid cases in 24 hours. That was its highest level of daily infections since mid-January. The country has been under lockdown since late January.
Myanmar unrest
Another deadly day of protests in Myanmar where people have held new anti-coup rallies in defiance of a military crackdown. 14 protesters and a police officer were killed during the latest protests in Myanmar. Anti-coup demonstrations have been ongoing there since the military seized power on February the first. It alleged voter fraud in November’s elections won by the party of de factor leader Ann Suu Chi. She has remained in custody since the coup. Protesters want her release and a return to civilian rule. The military has used tear gas and live rounds to quell the protests, killing at least 80 people so far. More than 2,100 have been detained too.
