Ten moderate Republican US senators have proposed a $600 billion relief package to counter President Joe Biden's plan to deal with economic ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The White House signaled Sunday that it is open to new initiatives despite Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package.

"He is open to ideas, wherever they may come. ... What he's uncompromising about is the need to move with speed on a comprehensive approach here," Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council, told NBC. "A piecemeal approach ... is not a recipe for success."

It was  not clear whether the outreach by 10 of the 50 Republicans in the 100-seat chamber would affect plans by Democrats in control of Congress.

"Ours is about $600 billion. ... We're targeted to the needs of the American people," Senator Bill Cassidy, one of the 10 senators, told Fox News.

The president hopes to win a quick bipartisan backing for his relief package as the coronavirus keeps taking more lives in the United States.

“You have to act now. There is no time to delay,” Biden said Friday when he and Vice President Kamala Harris met with their economic advisers, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. “The risk is not doing too much. The risk is not doing enough.”

The American nation is, meanwhile, awaiting the third round of federal stimulus checks.

“We recognize your calls for unity and want to work in good faith with your administration to meet the health, economic, and societal challenges of the Covid crisis,” the senators wrote to Biden. “With your support, we believe Congress can once again craft a relief package that will provide meaningful, effective assistance to the American people and set us on a path to recovery.”
