Afghanistan’s Health Ministry says the first round of the polio campaign in 2021 has covered some 10 million children.

Volunteer workers who have joined the movement say they feel duty-bound to be knocking on doors everywhere to vaccinate all the children below five years of age.

The Taliban’s green light to the campaign as well as the government’s resolve to uproot polio have been widely welcomed by locals.

There are calls for Kabul and the Taliban to expand efforts to serve the nation through an urgent ceasefire and the provision of healthcare service to all.

Official statements by the health ministry before the launch of the campaign predicted that over three million kids were unlikely to have access to the polio shot due to rising violence.

Fighting is underway between the militants and government forces across 20 out of the country’s 34 provinces.

The government has not announced the precise number of the deprived children.
