Yemen’s UNESCO-listed houses in Old City of Sana’a collapsing

Years of air raids and bombings combined by heavy rains damaged Sana’a historic neigborhoods which date back to the 11th century. More than 6,000 archaeological homes are now in danger of collapsing due to the ongoing conflict and neglect. Yemeni officials have launched a project to help the owners of these houses to preserve the buildings and mend the damage.
Fifteen buildings were completely destroyed, while 45 others partially collapsed. The foundation of hundreds of houses are also heavily damaged. The General Authority for the Preservation of Historic Cities said that the transfer of the Central Bank to Aden caused the suspension of the budget allocated for the restoration of homes.
The Yemeni government blames the ongoing Saudi war on Yemen for what happened to the second historic city of the world.
The Old City of Sana’a has been threatened with being removed from the UNESCO World Heritage List. Riyadh deliberately targets the historic sites to obliterate the features of Yemeni civilization.
