Russia says US election system has ‘obvious shortcomings’

Russian Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

Russia says the electoral system of the United States suffers from “obvious shortcomings” due to the outdated nature of the relevant legislation and a lack of regulation.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the remarks on Thursday as President Donald Trump demanded a recount and threatened legal action after the razor-edge US presidential race was tilted toward Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

She said both presidential candidates had an equal chance of winning and pointed out “obvious shortcomings in the American electoral system.”

“This is partly due to the archaic nature of the relevant legislation and a lack of regulation in a number of fundamental points,” Zakharova said during a weekly press conference.

Russia expresses hope that the US will be able to elect its next president in “full compliance with the American constitution,” she added.

“The most important thing is to avoid the occurrence of mass riots in the country,” Zakharova noted, a day after clashes erupted between US police and protesters in New York City amid a state of high anxiety across the nation over the winner of the nail-biter election, which is tarnished by Trump’s fraud claims.

Separately on Thursday, the Kremlin said in a statement that the lack of clarity in the November 3 vote could have a negative impact on the global economy and the world at large.

Biden, 77, moved closer to victory in the race on Thursday as election officials tallied votes in the handful of states that will determine the outcome.

Groups of protesters have already taken to the streets here and there in the US, supporting their candidate, Trump, who has ordered a complete halt to counting votes in some states over fraud allegations.
