Expert: Barbados move may lead to 'chain reaction' among Caribbean island nations

Abayomi Azikiwe believes Barbados' decision to ditch the Queen as head of state will have far-reaching impact on the politics of the Caribbean island nations

The small Caribbean island nation of Barbados announced on September 16 that it plans to remove Queen Elizabeth II as head of a state by November 2021 in order to achieve "full sovereignty", 55 years after gaining independence from the UK.

A leading expert on the issue, Abayomi Azikiwe, tells Press TV that Barbados' move may create a "chain reaction" among other Caribbean island nations. According to Azikiwe, Barbados (which was once described as more British than Britain itself) could become the spearhead for the long-expected emergence of a Caribbean Federation.

Azikiwe, who is the editor of the Pan-African News Wire, argues that Barbados' bold action could even foster unity across the wider region, in effect promoting political and cultural solidarity between the Caribbean island nations and the much larger states in central and southern America.
