The Celtics were the better side of the match as they took the opening quarter 39 to 23 before taking the next 1 with a single point ahead that led to their 59 to 42 lead at the intermission.
The defending champions clawed their way back and took the 3rd quarter 31 to 29, which was not enough to keep up with the Celtics, who regrouped and won the final frame, sealing the overall victory with an 18-point margin. Game 2 will be held on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Clippers booked a place in the Western Conference after beating the Dallas Mavericks 111 to 97 in Game 6 of the 1st round series.
The Clippers had the upper hand before the intermission with a 57 to 51 lead. They dominated the match in the next two quarters and managed to finish the 1st round series 4-2.
Kawhi Leonard tallied 33 points for the Clippers, while Luka Doncic bagged 38 for the Mavericks. The Clippers will meet either the Denver Nuggets or the Utah Jazz in the Western Conference semis.
