A recent report of Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) highlights some achievements of Afghan security forces in counter-narcotics. This as the US has failed to achieve its goals in this regard.
The Afghan government welcomes a report by the SIGAR regarding some major achievements of Afghan security forces in their counter-narcotics campaign. It says high amounts of drugs have been seized by Afghan troops while dozens of major drug mafia leaders have been captured by the police.
As facts on the ground show, drug crisis plus other challenges such as terrorism in Afghanistan have prompted many experts to express their concern in this regard and blame some other players mainly the US for failing in counter-narcotics campaign. Iran says the only way to overcome challenges such as terrorism and drug crisis, is to strengthen regional cooperation.
Counter-narcotics was one of the top missions of the US troops after their invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. But 19 years on, Afghanistan has become one of the world’s largest opium producers.
