The GOP officially nominates US President Donald Trump to run as the party's nominee against former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

The Republican National Convention kicked off Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a roll-call vote to officially proclaim Trump as the 2020 Republican nominee.

Unlike Republicans, Democrats held a virtual convention last week due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Trump is expected to make an appearance every night until the end of the convention on Thursday, when he will give a formal acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House.

Trailing the former vice president in the national public opinion polls, Trump is hoping for a boost after pronounced support from the Republicans at the convention.

“Where Joe Biden sees American darkness, I see American greatness,” the president said Friday at a gathering of the Council for National Policy, which is composed of leading Republican donors. “Joe Biden grimly declared a season of American darkness, but look at what we’ve accomplished, until the plague came in, and look, we’re doing it again.”

Some polls, meanwhile, suggested that after the Democratic National Convention, Biden has gained more popularity in the run-up to the November vote.
