Venezuela and Cuba continue to strengthen their ties amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has hardly hit Latin American countries.

Around 230 Cuban medics have arrived in the Bolivarian Republic to help the country fight the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This comes as infections have risen in Venezuela.

Although Caracas and Havana are both facing illegal economic sanctions by the US, which have taken a toll on the two countries’ health systems, they have managed to keep infections at lower levels compared with other nations in the region.

Venezuelan officials say the coordinated work with the Cubans will help them flatten the curve of the pandemic.

Experts say the help and expertise provided by Cuban doctors — who have also aided other countries grappling with the pandemic — will be crucial for Venezuela.

Cuba and Venezuela have held a strategic alliance over two decades. Now in the time of the pandemic, their relations keep growing stronger through medical assistance as both nations confront US sanctions.
