The Lebanese capital of Beirut was rocked by a massive blast on Tuesday, with the latest reports by the country’s health ministry showing that 78 people had lost their lives and nearly 4,000 others sustained injuries.

The powerful explosion took place in port warehouses that stored highly explosive material near central Beirut.

Video footage from the site showed the blast sent seismic shockwaves that shattered windows, smashed masonry and shook the ground across the Lebanese capital.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced three days of national mourning for the victims of the deadly incident and declared a state of emergency across the country for two weeks.
