A team of San Pedro Paleontology museum paleontologists have discovered a fossil of a mysterious animal, appearing to belong to a giant sloth, in Buenos Aires province in Argentina.
The enormous left femur bone, seen at the museum on Wednesday after detailed research, allowed the scientists to hypothetically reconstruct the body of an ancient animal.
A colossus mammal lived around 700,000 years ago and measured at least four meters with a hypothetical weight of four tonnes, said the director of San Pedro Paleontology Museum Jose Luis Aguilar.
"It is an animal that the museum has actually been following since 2018," Aguilar explained, saying the giant artifact "is already the second specimen that comes from a [historic] layer of about 700,000 years ago."
The fossil has been extracted with a digger at a depth between eight and nine meters during paleontology excavations in Buenos Aires province.
