Berlin marks 71st anniversary of end of Cold War blockade
Berlin Mayor Michael Muller and several other officials commemorated the 71st anniversary of the end of the Berlin Blockade outside the former Tempelhof International Airport in Berlin on Tuesday.
The officials can be seen laying wreaths at the Berlin Airlift Memorial while keeping to the social distancing rules.
"It was an act of solidarity that led to the end of the blockade 71 years ago," said Muller during the ceremony.
"Together we are facing many challenges and I'm sure that we can and will overcome them unitedly," he added.
The Berlin Airlift was organised by The Western Allies during the Cold War to carry supplies to the people of West Berlin, starting on June 26, 1948 - two days after the Soviet Union severed land and water connections to the city. Despite the blockade being officially lifted by the Soviet Union on May 12, 1949, the Airlift continued and only officially ended on September 30, 1949, in order to restock surpluses of materials.
During that time railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control were blocked by the USSR.
Allied pilots flew over 278,000 flights to Berlin, carrying about 2.3 million tons of supplies.
