S Koreans return to amusement parks, cinemas as social distancing rules ease

South Koreans flocked to an amusement park in Seoul on Sunday, May 3, taking advantage of relaxed social distancing rules and a long weekend holiday.

Most of the visitors were seen wearing masks, and the park also required people to maintain a two-metre distance, apart from having their temperature checked at the entrance.

Amusement parks in South Korea were never closed, but very few visitors had ventured out there in the past weeks, especially during the peak of the outbreak.

After grappling with the first major outbreak outside China, South Korea has largely managed to bring the outbreak under control without major disruptions with a massive testing campaign and intensive contact tracing.

The South Korean government announced it will further relax social distancing rules starting on May 6, allowing a phased reopening of businesses, and also allow gatherings and events to take place as people follow disinfection guidelines.

South Korea reported 13 new cases on Sunday, bringing the national tally to 10,793.
