Broken promises, health issues and hunger. The lockdown is not yet over, but these workers have been told not to come to office as factories have no demand for exports.
These workers have defied the coronavirus-related lockdown to stage a hungerstrike in protest against recent factory lay-offs. They say they can’t meet their basic needs since they were already living hand-to-mouth before the corona-virus contagion hit Karachi.
Khalid Khan is the president of National Labor Federation Karachi who is representing here 50 different associations of labor from different sectors and industries. He is disappointed with government's short-lived promises.
Participants warn officials to stick to their promises and bound employers to pay workers’ salaries before these workers come out on streets across Pakistan. They demand the international Labor Organization to take notice.
About 30% of Pakistan's 220 million population lives under poverty line or earn a little more than 2 dollars a day. They run the risk of both the coronavirus and hunger. So far, over 10,000 confirmed corona cases have been reported in the country since February 26 that are feared to grow more.
