Tokyo Olympics to start in July 2021
Japan has announced the inauguration date of the Tokyo Olympic games in 2021 after being postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Tokyo 2020 organizing committee said on Monday that the postponed Olympic games will begin on the 23rd of July next year and run until the 8th of August.
Meanwhile the Paralympics games will now take place between the 24th of August and will be ended on the 5th of September 2021.
The Olympics will still be called Tokyo 2020 despite taking place in 2021. The games were postponed last week due to protect the health of the athletes and everyone involved and to support the containment of the Covid-19 virus.
The delay is the 1st in the 124-year history of the modern Olympics. The postponement represents a huge blow for Japan which invested 13 billion dollars in the run-up to the event and raised 3 billion dollars from domestic sponsors.
