Mexican Pastry chef's coronavirus cake goes viral
When asked by a client to bake a coronavirus cake, Mexican pastry chef didn't expect the commotion it was going to cause.
"I've baked like 25 coronavirus cakes already since March 18", said Thania Cardena from San Francisco de Campeche on Sunday.
"The motif came from a client. It was actually supposed to be another idea, but that same day I was going to deliver the cake, she said, "No, I don't want Frida Kahlo, let's make a joke with the birthday girl, I want it to be coronavirus'"
"And then I went to several places, looked online and all and I realized there was in fact no coronavirus cake, only toilet paper ones, which was the trend of the moment."
"For instance, I put toilet paper because of that period when everybody went crazy, a face mask, antibacterial gel that also many people bought and the image of what coronavirus looks like."
The "virus cake" went viral, hit the news and now different bakeries across Mexico are reproducing Thania's creation for those who are celebrating their birthday amid the pandemic.
The cake features references to hand sanitiser, toilet paper due to panic buying, and the characteristic spikes of coronavirus, with an added angry face for good measure.
Mexico has so far confirmed 993 cases of COVID-19 with 20 fatalities.
