Venezuela foils assassination plan against Maduro

The Venezuelan government has foiled a plan to attack President Nicolas Maduro and other top officials. Caracas says the assassination plan was orchestrated by US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido, a claim which opposition lawmakers reject.
The government of Venezuela says a plan to kill Nicolas Maduro and other high-ranking officials was funded by US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido. Caracas stressed that a vehicle loaded with war weapons was discovered in Colombia trying to illegally enter Venezuela.
The country's intelligence agency showed a video with the confession of Clever Alcala, a retired Venezuelan army general, who was in charge of the paramilitary operation. Alcala admitted that the original plan was to attack top officials from the Maduro Administration, including the President himself. He confessed that Guaido was directly involved in this murder attempt against the Venezuelan head of state and provided details about the plan.
However, the opposition rejects any involvement in the assassination plan.
The controversy comes at times when the US has escalated its hostility against Venezuela.
While the Venezuelan government is fighting against the Covid-19, the US backed-opposition tries to oust Maduro by any means. In response, Caracas has pledged to go on uncovering and beating any conspiracy.
