Ten days after the signing of a peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban militant group, the Pentagon has confirmed the beginning of a drawdown of American troops in Afghanistan.

The move is part of the US-Taliban deal that sets a 14-month period for US forces to withdraw from Afghanistan. The US military says, the withdrawal of troops does not mean the end of Washington’s involvement in fighting terrorism in Afghanistan.

However, the troops’ withdrawal has created mixed reactions in Afghanistan.

Some believe the move serves Washington’s regional and international goals.

The presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan has always been considered as the top pretext for Taliban militant group to continue its insurgency. Now, despite the start of the US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan, many doubt about the real will of the Taliban regarding the end of war in the country.

The start of withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan coincided with the launch of two separate swearing-in ceremonies in the capital Kabul. With the country facing a fragile situation, Afghans expect their political leaders to set aside their differences and work on a joint plan to run the affairs.
