Corona cases rise in Iran, so do efforts to contain virus

As the coronavirus takes more lives in Iran, the hustle and bustle gradually disappears, educational centers are shut down and many national events are cancelled.
On Tuesday, the death toll from coronavirus reached 25 in Iran; 130 more are tested positive for infection. Protective masks are now high in demand across Iran. Most drugstores are depleted of masks.
The government advised people to remain calm, while promising to dispense essential protective items such as masks and disinfectants for free, anytime soon.
With the holy religious city of Qom being the epicenter, the deadly virus quickly spilled into the surrounding provinces such as Tehran. Eleven more provinces are also affected by the virus.
To contain the outbreak, Iran’s Health Ministry has embarked on preventive measures. Large-scale cleaning and disinfection are underway in vulnerable areas such as airports, rail stations and bus terminals.
The government has also ordered plants producing protective face masks to ramp up production to full capacity.
The Ministry of Defense, which runs major industrial units across the country, also placed orders for mass production of disinfectants.
Coronavirus stepped into existence in China in late December last year. The virus attacks the respiratory system and is highly contagious.
The epidemic has killed over 2,500 people in mainland China and has infected more than 79,000 worldwide, mostly in China. Corona is now a global emergency.
