In tennis, Cristian Garin has won his first ATP 500 crown after edging out Italian qualifier Gianluca Mager 7-6 and 7-5 in the Rio Open Final.
Third-seeded Garin thought he was having a comfortable evening against his underdog opponent after breaking him in the first game of the opening set, but Mager fought back and kept him on the move to force a tie-break.
Yet Garin regained his composure to deliver a 7-3 win and head into the second set, where he capitalized on Mager’s poor service to take four straight games and clinch the victory.
It was Garin’s second trophy of the year after also triumphing earlier this month at the Cordoba Open in Argentina.
