An alarming development that heightens the risk of nuclear war. The United States new so-called 'low-yield' nuclear warheads, deployed on a nuclear submarine that is currently patrolling the Atlantic Ocean, are still powerful enough to kill many tens of thousands of people. This is a warning by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
The new development comes following the demise of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or INF, and the unclear fate of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which will end this year. A recent Congressional Budget Office report shows that Washington seeks to boost its nuclear capabilities, estimating that it will spend some 500 billion dollars on nuclear weapons from 2019 through 2028. This shows an increase of 94 billion Dollars, or 23 percent, from the previous 10-year estimate of $400 billion.
