The International Atomic Energy Agency marks World Cancer Day with an event focusing on the key role of nuclear and radiation medicine in managing cervical cancer.

The IAEA supports member states in their efforts to improve access to radiotherapy.

Recently, medical professionals have been warning how US sanctions are comprising cancer care in Iran by blocking supply chains contrary to Washington’s claims that maximum pressure is not affecting the area of medicine.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi says the agency provides all member states including Iran with support through its Program of Action for Cancer Therapy, known as PACT.

IAEA Senior Consultant Massoud Samiei says Iran and the agency’s cooperation on nuclear medicine is positive in spite of the sanctions.

But US sanctions are nevertheless threatening the health of millions of ordinary Iranians.

Human rights groups have expressed concern over indications that the pain inflicted on the Iranian people through US sanctions is intentional and part of a strategy to rally the people against the government.
