Ministry of Defence has lost 'rifles' and 'ammunition'
In the latest case of lax security, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has once again been proven to be careless with safeguarding its sensitive and dangerous assets.
A Freedom of Information request by Sky News has revealed that 11 “rifles”, 42 “explosive munitions” and 1,153 “rounds of ammunition” have been lost by the MoD in the last year.
According to Sky News, the data covers the twelve months from September 26, 2018 to September 30, 2019.
The loss of guns and bullets has raised fears that the stolen items could be used in violent crime.
A representative of the campaign group, Gun Control Network, told Sky News that the stolen weapons “go on to be sold, illegally imported, used in crime or hoarded by ‘gun enthusiasts’ in collections kept in homes, garages, stores and outbuildings”.
This is just the latest episode involving the loss of sensitive and dangerous equipment by the MoD.
The Daily Mail reported on December 22, 2016, that MoD staff had lost 800 laptops containing sensitive information in a 19-month period, at a rate of more than one a day.
Going further back, The Telegraph reported on July 22, 2010, that MoD staff had lost 340 laptops in a two-year period.
