The navies of Iran, Russia and China kicked off a four-day military exercise in the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean on Friday.

Code-named “Marine Security Belt," the trilateral exercise is aimed at promoting regional security and peace as well as safeguarding international trade. According to the deputy commander of the Iranian navy, the joint drills will assess the capability and preparedness of the three naval forces, identify deficiencies and address them on priority.

The whole range of naval operations will be practiced in the drills, such as air defense, and defense against attacks from pirates and terrorists. Admiral Tahani says the goal is to learn as much as possible, especially when it comes to safeguarding the security of international trade in the strategic regions and sharing experience in maritime rescue operations.

Experts say, as 2019 ends, the US seems to have failed in its triple containment policy toward China, Russia and Iran. It also failed to hinder the presence and influence of their naval forces in the region. They say the joint exercises bring a counterbalance against the US, its forever wars and their fallout.

The trilateral military exercise by the naval forces of Iran, Russia and China will wrap up on Monday, December 30.
