Both Democrats and Republicans are campaigning for their own re-elections using the Donald Trump impeachment by the US House of Representatives, according to Myles Hoenig, an American political analyst and activist.

Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday shortly before the House of Representatives formally charged Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

“Everyone who stands in the well of the House of Representatives talks about how he or she comes to this point with a ‘heavy heart’. But why? This should be a day of celebration as the Constitution, as it has been written, is being honored with an impeachment vote, and no tanks are on Pennsylvania Ave to protect the head of state under siege. Although Congress is often the last place where real democracy is practiced, one can almost say, ‘this is what democracy looks like’ until of course Congress decides to take away another basic right of ours,” Hoenig said.

“The Congress members who speak today are there for one purpose- their own re-election campaigns. No one is going to convince the other side to change their vote. Democrats and Republicans all speak from the same script, repeating ad nauseam tropes and well-worn slogans that have lost their impact weeks, even months ago. The main arguments posited by the Republicans include the claim that this is the Democrats’ attempt to remove a president they know will defeat them in 2020,” he stated.

“In spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, they rely on ‘alternative facts’ to make their case. They claim that there was no quid pro quo when so many of Trump’s spokespeople openly admitted to it. And the most ludicrous of all the Republican claims is that this is a day that will live in infamy, as stated by one during the proceedings. Again, we must realize that for our democracy to operate effectively, the rule of law must be followed in this case, even when it rarely is for the majority of us when it comes to surveillance, imprisonment based on race and class, corruption at all levels of government,” he noted.

“The Democrats don’t come off any better with their own brand of propaganda. Although truthful with the facts of the case, they play up the Russia hysteria as if our very existence is at stake, and therefore Trump by his subservience to the Putin dictatorship is selling our souls over to the devil himself. There’s no acknowledgment, or even understanding, that Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election was negligible, and far less involved than other nations, Israel for example, who has interfered in our elections openly and supported by the entire Congress for many electoral cycles. The other major fear mongering trope of the Democrats is that Russia is ruthlessly fighting the courageous democratic nation of Ukraine, without any regard to how the Ukrainian government is waging a war against ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine,” he said.

“Today’s show will end as expected. Trump will be impeached. Trump will go on a lunatic rage. Both the Republicans and Democrats will take their sound bites and play it up for their own re-elections. And ironic of all, we can easily see Joe Biden failing in his third attempt to win the presidency, the target of which is what began the official impeachment process. So often it’s the cover up that’s worse than the crime. Here the reason for Trump’s fall from grace may very well be a non-issue in November, as the Democrats just may very well nominate someone other than crazy Uncle Joe,” he concluded.
