'No means no': Swiss protesters rally against violence towards women

Swiss protesters, mostly women rallied in Geneva on Monday (November 25) to speak out again violence against women on the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Protesters gathered around 25 pairs of women's shoes arranged in a circle with candles to represent the number of women who die every year in Switzerland as a result of gender based violence.

According to government statistics, Switzerland saw 18,522 reported cases of domestic violence in 2018 an 8.8% increase from 2017.

Protesters criticized the authorities for failing to understand victims and for not providing them with adequate care.

According to a 2019 survey by Amnesty International 22% of Swiss women had been subjected to non-consensual sexual relations.

In June scores of women went on strike across the country to highlight their wealthy nation's poor record on female rights.
