Democrats oppose billionaires like Bloomberg running for US president: Analyst
After years of debate over wealth inequality in the US, the majority of Democratic voters are opposed to a billionaire candidate like Michael Bloomberg entering the US presidential race to challenge Donald Trump, says an American political analyst.
The Democratic Party “is not going to be receptive to a billionaire funding his own candidacy and their mind tempting to buy the political process,” said Rodney Martin, a former congressional staffer based in Los Angeles.
“The American population…has to decide does it want it politics dominated by rich white billionaires,” Martin told Press TV on Monday.
“It’s very interesting that the possibility of two rich white billionaires from New York City to be the only choice for the American electorate in 2020,” Martin said. “I just don’t think the American electorate is going to stand for that at all.”
Bloomberg formally entered the race to be US president on Sunday, pledging to "rebuild America" as he joined the crowded field of Democrats seeking to take on Trump.
"The stakes could not be higher. We must win this election. And we must begin rebuilding America," Bloomberg, 77, said on his website as a US$30 million ad campaign touting his candidacy hit US airwaves.
"We cannot afford four more years of President Trump's reckless and unethical actions," the billionaire businessman said.
"He represents an existential threat to our country and our values. If he wins another term in office, we may never recover from the damage," Bloomberg added.
As of November 2019, Bloomberg's net worth was estimated at $58 billion, making him the 9th richest person in the United States and the 14th richest person in the world.
The net worth of Trump is not publicly known. Various news organizations have attempted to estimate Trump's wealth, including Forbes, which put it at about $3.1 billion as of 5 March 2019.
Former vice president Joe Biden leads the race ahead of Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, according to national polls.
Bloomberg is poised to run as a centrist and analysts suspect that he could take away some of the support enjoyed by fellow moderate Biden.
