The former extremist leader and now a supporter of democracy, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, has warned the IEC of the dire consequences of what he called the commission’s illegal attempts, including validating non-biometric ballots. That is why, he along with the rest of presidential candidates, excluding President Ghani’s team, has called on the IEC to urgently meet their so-called legitimate demands, namely the annulment of non-biometric votes, as well as some other technical and legal issues .
However, the IEC has already ignored such demands, which has created a fragile environment in the country.
Many here believe a flare-up of the electoral crisis in Afghanistan is likely to lead the country to a second round of presidential election or even the establishment of an interim government.
Let’s not forget that Kabul alone cannot tackle the election crisis as it is also busy with the controversial issue of peace talks with the Taliban militant group.
Given that the Afghan peace trend is directly linked to the country’s latest presidential election, many here argue that is better for Kabul to end the ongoing controversies between top political circles in the election process first, before getting involved in direct talks with the Taliban to bring lasting peace to the country.
