Russian forces are expanding their presence in northeastern Syria. It comes on the backdrop of a deal struck between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after marathon talks.
The agreement will see Moscow and Damascus supervising the removal of Kurdish Peoples Protection Units or YPG from the region.
Ankara views the YPG as a terrorist organization and had vowed a full-out military offensive to cleanse areas along its border from the group.
It now appears that Moscow has managed to diffuse what was quite a tense situation in the Arab country. Observers say this shows Russias growing influence in the region at the expense of the United States.
