Violent clashes, riots and burning cars. These are the scenes coming out of Spain’s regional Catalonian capital Barcelona this week as pro-independence Catalonians responded angrily to Monday's jailing of nine separatist leaders, over their roles in the failed bid for secession two years ago.

The three days worth of violence has forced a concerned regional President to issue a call for calm.

The separatists were convicted of sedition over their role in an independence referendum in 2017, which Spain said was illegal.

Another three were found guilty of disobedience and fined, but not jailed. All 12 defendants denied the charges.

Spain’s government has refused to back down following the violence, with the Spanish acting Prime Minister vowing to respond using all the state’s power.

Despite the comments from the political leadership, the footage of police brutal crackdown on demonstrators has been well-circulated online – leading to renewed calls for further protests and condemnation of alleged Spanish state oppression of the Catalonian people.
