Democrats have sought to impeach Trump since he entered office: Analyst

Democrats in the US Congress have sought to impeach President Donald Trump since he entered the White House in January 2017, says an American political analyst in Virginia.

“As far as the issue of impeachment, the Democrats have been looking a for any number of things that they can potentially use to impeach the president, almost as soon as he took office,” said Keith Preston, chief editor of AttacktheSystem.com.

“It’s not like this is anything new on the Democrats part; this is just the latest in a series of efforts Democrats have made to try to impeach the president,” Preston told Press TV.

The US House of Representatives on Tuesday launched an official impeachment investigation of Trump after he encouraged a foreign leader to conduct a probe that could damage a political rival.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, announced the investigation at a news conference, declaring “no one is above the law.”

There has been growing support among Democratic Party lawmakers for the move after Trump acknowledged that he asked Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate the son of presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, resigned on Friday following disclosures that he had connected Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani with Ukrainian officials to investigate Biden and his son.

A whistleblower complaint from within the US intelligence community, released publicly on Thursday, described Volker as trying to “contain the damage” from efforts by Giuliani to press Ukraine to investigate Biden, one of Trump’s main rivals in next year’s presidential election.

The whistleblower complaint at the heart of the growing controversy over Trump’s call with the Ukrainian president claims not only that Trump misused his office for personal gain and endangered national security, but that unidentified White House officials tried to keep it a secret even within the government.
