Trump exposed to 'national security risks' while seeking Ukraine’s help

This combination of AFP file pictures created on September 24, 2019 shows Democratic presidential hopeful former Vice President Joe Biden speaking during the third Democratic primary debate of the 2020 presidential campaign season at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas on September 12, 2019 and US President Donald Trump waiting to speak during the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly at UN Headquarters in New York, September 24, 2019.

US President Donald Trump might have exposed himself to "serious national security and counter-intelligence risks" while pressuring Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, says the intelligence community's inspector general.

The warning was included in a Justice Department legal opinion released on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

This is while Democrats have launched an impeachment inquiry into the president’s abuse of power.

Trump has apparently pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate his potential opponent for the 2020 presidential election, warning that he would not give Ukraine the promised military aid in case he refused.

Republicans have thrown their support behind the president but, according to Vanity Fair, they “worry impeachment proceedings will destroy his ego and derail his agenda.”

The president has been incessantly posting tweets ever since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the formal beginning of the impeachment inquiry.

Some Republicans are instead focusing their attention on Hunter Biden’s corruption.

“My guess is that, in the long run, the White House and campaign think the media eventually and reluctantly will have to take a serious look at Hunter Biden’s business dealings both in China and the Ukraine, and it will be devastating,” said former House speaker Newt Gingrich.

Other members of the GOP, meanwhile, argue that the released transcript of Trump’s call with Zelensky shows no wrongdoing.

“Despite the wild speculations from the media, career intelligence community staffers, and congressional Democrats, the actual transcript of the call reveals no illegal quid pro quo,” said Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
