Restrictions in place to prevent march by pro-freedom groups in Kashmir

New Delhi has imposed restrictions on the movement of people in Kashmir to prevent protest rallies by pro-freedom groups. The restrictions come amid UN calls on India to end collective punishment of Kashmiris.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, witnessed tougher movement restrictions on Friday after pro-freedom groups called for a protest march toward the UN office.
Barbed wire fences and roadblocks were put across the roads guarded by security forces in many parts of the city.
This happened after posters were reportedly put up overnight in Srinagar, calling for a march toward the office of UN military observers group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to protest the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomous status.
Amid communication blockade in Indian-administered Kashmir, New Delhi has an uphill task to restore normalcy after it scrapped Kashmir’s autonomous status on August 5.
Parts of summer capital Srinagar witnessed partial restrictions while in some sensitive areas curfew was announced and people were asked to stay indoors.
Press TV visited the outskirts of Srinagar where overnight raids by security forces have created a sense of fear among people. The areas remained inaccessible as people had blocked roads with logs to stop military vehicles from coming to these areas.
All of a sudden people came out of their houses, surrounded us, asking which organization we worked for. They started chanting pro-freedom slogans, amid tears and anguish.
There have been thousands of arrests in Kashmir since August 5. The communication blackout continues with internet access restricted and no mobile network coverage.
UN experts have urged India to end what they call collective punishment in Kashmir.
