Yemeni forces hit airport in Saudi Arabia’s Asir province with combat drones

Yemeni army troopers, backed by allied fighters from Popular Committees, have hit an airport in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern province of Asir, using a squadron of domestically-manufactured combat drones.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, told Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masirah news website that the combat drones successfully hit a fuel station in Abha airport on Saturday.

He added that the Yemeni drones attacked the airport for a second time a few hours later and hit the control tower of the airport with precision.

Both attacks, which suspended flights, inflicted significant material damage on the designated targets, Saree noted, adding that the attacks were carried out by Qasef-2K (Striker-2K) drones.

He also noted that the attacks were in response to the crimes committed by a Saudi-led coalition, referring to the 26 Saudi airstrikes that have hit Yemen over the past 48 hours.

Yemeni forces regularly target positions inside Saudi Arabia in retaliation for the Saudi-led war on Yemen, which began in March 2015 in an attempt to reinstall a former regime and eliminate the Houthi Ansarullah movement, which has been defending the country along with the armed forces.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the Saudi-led war has claimed the lives of over 60,000 Yemenis since January 2016.

Over the past four years, the Saudi-led war machine has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The United Nations has already warned that more than 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.
