Brexit Party leads polls in run up to EU elections in UK

Brexit Party, a newly-established party in Britain campaigning for the country’s clean break from the European Union, is surging in polls by a big margin as the ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour Party continue to lose much of their public support over their failure to deliver on results of the 2016 referendum that triggered the divorce.

A poll by Opinium published in The Observer showed that 34 percent of voters were intending to vote for the Brexit Party in the May 23 elections.

The poll said the ruling party of Prime Minister Theresa May had a third of support compared to the Berxit Party with only 11 percent while the Labour, led by Jeremy Corbyn, stood at 21 percent. The poll showed that even the liberal democrats had performed better than the Tories in the run-up to the EU Parliament votes with 12 percent.

The survey comes after the Tories and the Labour both suffered battering defeats in local elections earlier this month. Many blame the failure of the two parties dominating the parliament to agree on a Brexit deal for the losses in the elections. Experts say the Brexit Party, launched by veteran politician Nigel Farage only last month, has managed to capitalize on this political failure to improve its ratings.

Farage, a lawmaker for more than 20 years who campaigned for leaving the EU once he was leading the UK Independence Party (UKIP), is now advocating for a disorderly Brexit, saying it would be the only way to respect the democratic will of the British people.

In a bid to maintain their position in the government, the ruling Tories have asked May to step down and allow someone else to lead the Brexit process.

May, whose divorce deal with the EU was defeated in the parliament on three separate attempts, have said she would resign once a Bexit settlement is found.
